Noise Model Simulation NMSIM

Noise Model Simulation

Wyle's new Noise Model Simulation (NMSim) provides unparalleled accuracy and flexibility for modeling noise from all transportation sources: aircraft (both fixed wing and helicopters), railroads and highways. NMSim has been field validated with noise measurements by the Department of Defense and Department of Interior and has proven to be exceptionally accurate even at low-levels of noise exposure.

What is NMSim?

Wyle's NMSim is a powerful noise model simulation tool which computes 3-dimensional, in-flight or en-route spectral noise energy for a wide variety of noise sources. Traditional aircraft noise models are integrated - they work from a database of sound exposure levels (SELs) from complete flyovers and are directed toward time-integrated noise metrics such as the Day Night Average Sound Level (DNL) and equivalent levels (Leq).

NMSim uses a more elaborate modeling approach in which the actual time history of noise is computed at each receiver location. Because it computes noise in terms of the complete, spectral time history, it can be used to analyze the data in A-weighted sound pressure levels or any other metric needed for the application.

Wyle developed NMSim as an adjunct to the FAA's Integrated Noise Model and DoD's NOISEMAP, adding powerful noise computation tools that these industry standards currently lack.

This simulation of aircraft flight shows complex terrain effects. Analytical displays give sound levels as well as location and flight characteristics.

NMSim 3-D Modeling Noise Simulation

NMSim provides powerful 3-Dimensional noise modeling capabilities, as shown here.

Simulations can be used to evaluate the change in noise exposure resulting from changes in flight procedures such as noise abatement flight tracks, flight profiles or engine power cut-backs. NMSim is also highly effective at demonstrating the different noise characteristics of various types of aircraft.

NMSim introduces the power to:

  • Account for shielding from buildings, barriers and hills when computing the noise propagation,
  • Account for different types of terrain when computing noise propagation,
  • Provide far greater detail than traditional integrated models,
  • Analyze noise using real radar data,
  • Combine the effects of several different noise sources,
  • Incorporate the effect of wind and temperature gradients on noise footprints,
  • Demonstrate the noise associated with individual events or a combination of various events from different noise sources.

NMSim shows effects of a Noise Barrier

NMSim shows the effect of a noise barrier (just in front of the aircraft) combined with highway or other noise sources.
